RAIL TIES
Rail Ties is a permanent public artwork that was commissioned
by the Gardiner Public Library in 2004.  The sculpture is sited
along the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail in Gardiner, New York.  The
artwork commemorates the old railroad line and it's stations.  It
consists of 33 rail ties one for each mile of the old Wallkill Valley
Line.  A simple map is carved into the wall of ties showing the
path of the original railroad.  The tracks are designated by a line
of rusting staples and the location of each station is marked with
a small plaque.  The site has been planted with indigenous
seedings that will eventually grow and partially engulf the artwork.
The finished project will appear as an overgrown rail bed turned
on end and act as a screen to the building which is adjacent to
the trail.
